Hey guys!

Call Me By Your Name

Movie, 2017

Call me by your name is a intimate portrayal of one’s first love. This is one of those recommendations that you probably already know, but the reason why I am still recommending this movie regardless is the fact for me personally I have enjoyed and appreciated this movie a bit more on every re-watch.

The movie tells the story of the romantic relationship between a 17-year-old, Elio (played by Timothée Chalamet), and Oliver (played by Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old graduate-student assistant to Elio’s father, an archaeology professor.  The movie takes place in Italy over a summer and recount how Elio and Oliver slowly fall in love. There is this timeless ambience in the film with the Italian summer fantasy full on display.

There are multiple songs in the movie by Sufjan Stevens that are just pure bliss to listen to. Mystery of Love is probably my favorite of the ones, but Vision of Gideon is also great. Both songs are masterfully utilized in the film.

This film is not really your typical love story. I like the fact that the main conflict of the film comes from the two characters, and thus is not your typical Romeo and Juliet inspired conflict of two people not allowed to fall in love because the society doesn’t want to allow it. It’s bittersweet and will probably make you cry. It’s charming to look at, pleasant to listen to, and will definitely be a indelible watch.

Billions

TV Show, 2016-present

When is Billions Season 5 Episode 8 Returning?

“Chuck Rhoades, a sincere but ruthless US attorney, engages in an egoistic battle with hedge fund kingpin Bobby ‘Axe’ Axelrod as they try to outdo each other in the competitive financial market.”

Billions focuses on the high finance world of New York. It is one of those show that you appreciate watching with your full attention devoted to it. Even though the concepts are not that complicated, it does help to have a basic understanding of the stock market and how it works. but don’t worry, even if you don’t, you can still appreciate the high-stakes well-written drama that Billions is.

You think one thing is going to happen but then something else happens and changes the whole perspective of the earlier scene. This attention to detail is not lost even in the smaller scenes and interactions.

The backbone of the show are the two main characters, Bobby Axelrod and Chuck Rhoades. Bobby Axelrod is played by Damian Lewis, and Chuck Rhoades is played by Paul Giamatti. None of them are actually good guys. Sure, they are likeable at times, they are charismatic for sure, but none of them is really a decent human being, and that’s the best part of the show.

With how the stock market has been a focus in the news lately, it is cool to watch a show that portrays the finance world in a light that the media usually doesn’t.

Internet Kingpin: The Hunt for the Genius Behind the Silk Road

YouTube, 2021

The story of Silk Road is the story about Ross Ulbriet. A young libertarian that created the first online marketplace on the dark web where you could buy or sell anything. He created Silk Road on his own, started selling drugs on it and as you could imagine, things escalated and got out of hands pretty fast.

This mini documentary was created by Jake Tran, a youtuber that makes videos about anything controversial from the world of finance, business, and politics. He has made a bunch of cool videos about Economics of the Mafia, How to launder money, and videos about different people like John McAfee, among others. The videos themselves are not visually something special, however the concepts and the presentations of the research is well made.

If you are interested in the economics of today’s financial world and want to consume media about interesting topics from this world, this channel is precisely for you. You will learn something new, while being entertained. It’s the best type of procrastination!
